I was first introduced to Bikram Yoga while living on Long Beach New York in 2010. I can’t say I was completely or immediately hooked and that it took over my life, but what it did do was change my life.
I have had most of the standard knee, ankle, hip injuries from being a professional dancer then cycling and pounding the pavements running for over 20 years training for triathlons and half marathons so at that point Bikram immediately helped rid me of my injuries so I maintained my practice alongside my other activities. I never had any injuries after that.
When I came back to Hull I quickly realised that the closest Bikram studio was Manchester! This was a problem for me and for Hull! Then things at work got tough. My work life balance was terrible and being undervalued as a person helped me to realise what I had to do……. I decided it was time for a change and with the encouragement, help and support of my partner, family and friends, I left my old life behind and embarked on a year of training at Bikram Yoga Manchester then attended Bikram Yoga teacher training in Thailand for 9 weeks in 2014. I was then lucky enough to be mentored at the best studio I know, Bikram Manchester. I was also lucky enough to be given work and support at Bikram Norwich and also covered at Bikram Warwick. A stint in Leeds and some special time working with beautiful teachers at Hot Yoga Sheffield has lead me back home to Hull where it was always my intention to bring Bikram and Hot Yoga.
In 2016 I achieved a qualification in teaching yoga to professional, semi and recreational athletes, qualified by Sarah Ramsden and Yoga Alliance. Sarah Ramsden works with Manchester City and United.
I’m not particularly spiritual (although some tell me different) so I like to think that I’m the person to bridge the gap between yoga and those that think yoga is not for them. Maybe you think that it’s a room full of hippies chanting and tying themselves in knots – I know I did! But It isn’t. I will only teach a class that’s of use to you and your body, a class that’s for everybody, every age and every ability. There’s no elitism in my classes. Just better bodies. (And a bit of a laugh).
The reason I teach Bikram Yoga, Athletics yoga and Hot Yoga? There’s nothing more rewarding for me than seeing someone being able to finally move in a way they never thought they could or thought they had lost. When students walk away knowing they’ve achieved something far greater than anything money can buy or the quick fix that medication can give them – their life changes. Mine did and I didn’t even know it could get this good!
I owe this to Josephine Donaldson in New York who bought me my first 10 class pass for Bikram Yoga Long Beach and the yoga towel which I still use today. I’ve met some truly wonderful and empowering people on my journey and so will you. This is the beginning of something truly amazing. Trust the process, I can’t tell you how happy I am that I did!
My favourite quote:
The Devil whispered in my ear, “You’re not strong enough to withstand the storm”.
Today I whispered in the Devils ear. “I AM the storm”.
My favourite Bikram quote……….
“What are you waiting for? Your Granny isn’t going to help you!”
